Today’s Birthday February 22: US actress Drew Barrymore (1975-).
A child star whose acting career was overshadowed by substance addictions during her adolescence, Drew Barrymore has since become hot property in Hollywood.
Born in Los Angeles on February 22, 1975, into a legendary acting family, she appeared in a television commercial for dog food when she was less than a year old.
Barrymore made her big-screen debut at age four in Altered States (1980).
She became a star at age seven when she stole the show in Steven Spielberg’s 1982 flick ET.
She then scored major roles in other films, including Irreconcilable Differences and adaptations of two Stephen King stories.
But her fledgling career was overshadowed by highly publicised bouts with alcohol and drugs and a subsequent suicide attempt, and she was placed in rehabilitation.
In 1989, Barrymore had her first adolescent movie role in Far From Home.
In the 1990s, the actress starred in a string of films that exploited her bad-girl image, including Poison Ivy and Guncrazy.
Better roles came her way in 1995, when she appeared in Boys on the Side, Mad Love and Batman Forever.
The following year she was seen in Scream and Everybody Says I Love You.
In 1998, Barrymore co-starred in The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler, and also in Ever After.
She was the executive producer and star of 1999’s Never Been Kissed and starred in the hit remake of Charlie’s Angels in 2000.
The film’s sequel, Charlie Angels: Full Throttle, was released in 2003 and was followed by Fifty First Dates (2004), which was another hit for Barrymore.
She produced and starred in Whip It alongside Juno actress Ellen Page.
In 2012, Barrymore married and had her first child with actor Will Kopelman.
In 2014, she’s due to return to the screen with Adam Sandler in the comedy Blended.
